Triple Championship for WSC Girls at Orange Classic
The Wellington Wave Soccer Club is proud to announce multiple teams walked away with the championship at the Orange Classic International Girls Soccer Tournament held in Plantation, Florida from December 28-30, 2011. The Orange Classic is a competitive showcase for college recruiters to observe the talents of young ladies and is held annually in South Florida. For younger girls, it gives clubs the opportunity to play in a highly competitive tournament to prepare for their future. This year’s event featured 280 teams in the U9-U19. The Wave’s U12, U13, U14 and U16 girls handily brought home the trophy and the U15 team advanced to the semi-finals.
Head Coach of the U12 Blue team, Patrick Zoete, who is also the club’s Director of Coaching, led the girls to victory in all five games with solid defense, great goaltending and an extremely diverse offensive attack.
. Defenders Samantha Jenkins, Lauryn Auger and goaltender Alexa Kovi surrendered only three goals throughout the tournament. As for the 19 goals manufactured on offense the list reads like a team roster. Samantha Sullivan, Megan Miserendino, Alli Rehr, Breanna Alarcon, Allison Breed, Natalie Navarro, Corina Forberger, Christina Coombs, and Ashlyn Nestor all scored goals in this team attack.
Most impressive was the girls’ ability to come back from an early 1-0 deficit in the finals against an extremely talented Davie Sharks team. The offensive passing attack led the Wave to a 2-1 victory. "The girls played with heart and they never gave up." said Coach Patrick of his team.
In his first year coaching for WSC, Hassan Jaddaoui, took the U13 Girls White team to their first Orange Classic Tournament. The Wave went 5-0 during the competition and outscored their opponents 18-1. "Our backline, led by Christina Carroll, Amanda Forero, and Megan Cebollero, stayed focused and alert throughout the tournament." Coach Hassan said of the Wave defense. The U13 team’s offense was led by Samantha Grebinar, Kayla McKenzie-Edmonds, and Bryle Barrameda. "The result was indicative of total team performance. A strong midfield and nice goals from a good attacking buildup throughout the tournament" added Coach Hassan.
The U14 girls showed their strength and competitiveness when they won their three regular play games with shutouts. They beat the Mako Soccer Club from Port St. Lucie 3-1 in the semifinals and Kendall Coalition from Miami 3-1 in the finals to win their division. Coach Gabriel Gusman was extremely proud of the girls as the team has gone through some major changes this year and has worked diligently to achieve this level of success. Gusman proudly said “his team showed patience, dedication and passion for learning and playing the game”. The team always enjoys playing in this completive and challenging tournament. The next major challenge will come in February at the Score at The Shore and State Cup Tournaments.
